The only channel to show the NBA on Australian Free To Air TV, One HD, recently announced that they will not carry the rights to the 2011/12 NBA season. In an announcement earlier this year, Channel Ten Network Holdings head Lachlan Murdoch announced that the 24/7 all sports channel OneHD, will be relaunched as a general entertainment channel designed to appeal to males aged between 25 and 54. Despite the announcement to show "Trailer Park" comedies and dramas over sport, One not only renewed, but seemingly increased their 2011 NFL season rights despite the NFL lockout. I was hoping the the same would happen for the 2011/12 NBA season but unfortunately I was wrong. Whether Ones new vision and target audience is bringing in better ratings or not, there has been a lot of fanfare on both their One HD TV Facebook page and their new Ten Sport TV page, which leads me to believe that there is still room for a all sport Free To Air channel on Australian TV...the problem appears to be the providers and lack of competition. It isn't all without loss however for those currently subscribed to Foxtel and their Sports package however, as ESPN Australia will once again carry the 2011/12 NBA season and provide featured live games, replays and special programming this season (which we will deliver in our weekly TV guide of course!). The other life saver will be NBA League Pass which will be an absolute must for any diehard fan this season. If the NFL lockout was any indication, plus the fact that this is a shortened season, League Pass should be a good price this season however no details have been announced yet. We will have an in depth NBA League Pass review when it is announced so make sure you head to our Facebook page and join our mailing list to stay updated.
