This Week In The NFL
NFLPA Gets In On The Legal Action
The NFLPA is the latest group
to take the NFL court, this time on behalf of all the players suspended by the NFL as a result of BountyGate. Although the Judge overseeing the lawsuits of both the NFLPA and Jonathon Vilma has ordered that they be consolidated
. Which frankly is a good thing cause I'm starting to lose track of all these lawsuits.
Drew Brees, NFLPA Win Franchise Tag Battle
Drew Brees and the NFLPA were battling the Saints over a Franchise Tag technicality, and the judgement has been ruled in favour of the star QB
. Brees was arguing that even though this is his first time tagged by the Saints, it is his second tag due to being franchised when he was still at the Chargers, the Saints argued that it only counts as his first. It is a significant win for Brees, because the next tag is his now officially his third, which means he will get paid 144% of his salary this year. Either way, this has made sure he will get paid.
Harvin Won't Hold Out
Percy Harvin, who is maybe or maybe not unhappy, will report
to the Minnesota Vikings training camp which leads us to believe that the incident is behind him and the club. The versatile Harvin is a key piece of the Vikings offence and it would be a huge blow if he decides he wants out again.
Ex-Raider Arrested For Multiple Murders
Former Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders Defensive End Anthony Smith is facing three additional murder charges
, while awaiting a re-trial for a previous murder charge. Smith, who was a member of the menacing Raiders teams of the 90's is also being charged with three counts of kidnapping and if found guilty, is eligible for the death penalty.
Ocho Wants To Play Until 40
If Chad Ochocinco has his way, we will be seeing him in the NFL for a while longer. The 34 year old WR, who signed with the Miami Dolphins in the offseason, told the South Florida-Sun Sentinel that he is going to play until he is 40
and this year he's going to show everyone that he can do it. After only 15 catches for 276 yards last season with the Patriots, he's going to have to lift his game.
Giants LB Pulling For The Jets?
Mark Herzlich, LB for the Super Bowl winning New York Giants, has said in an interview that he believes all New Yorkers, whether they are Giants or Jets fans barrack for the other team
when not playing against each other. He even went on to say that he hopes the Jets do well when he is not playing against them. Call me ignorant or whatever, but I don't see it. Giants and Jets fans, what do you think?
Antwaan Randle El Ready To Call It A Day
Antwaan Randle El, the receiver with a passer rating of 156.1, is ready to retire
after garnering little interest over the last two offseasons. While not boasting the numbers of a great receiver, 370 catches for 4,467 yards and 15 touchdowns, he was a threat due to his ability to pass the ball in trick plays. In 27 passing attempts, he completed 22 of them for 323 yards, with six touchdowns and no interceptions, the most famous completion being this one in Super Bowl XL:
Toomer Says Romo Better Than Eli
Amani Toomer is no stranger to controversy
and he's up to his old tricks again. This time he says Tony Romo of the Cowboys, is a better QB
than Eli Manning. He later stood by his comments, saying he was going by the numbers. Now this is a guy who once said Roger Goodell deals with players like the Gestapo
, so this comment definitely needs to be taken with a whole shakers worth of salt.
Adrian Peterson Arrested For Resisting Arrest
The best player on the Vikings' offence, Adrian Peterson, has already been forced to overcome a MCL and ACL tear suffered during the 2011 season. Now, he may have another hurdle to stiff-arm as he was arrested by the Houston Police Department early Saturday morning. After being confronted by police while drunk at a downtown club Peterson reportedly attempted to overpower them and escape, to no avail. He was released on bail and will front court next week. In related news Toby Gerhart's fantasy stock is at an all-time high.
