Get to know one of our newest Aussies in the NCAA, Cameron Johnston, who joins Ohio State.Former Aussie Rules player and ProKick Australia product Cameron Johnston might be the next big Australian punter. But before then, he's the next big Ohio State punter. Yep, that Ohio State, the one currently ranked second in the nation and favourites to challenge Alabama for the national title. Johnston is another excellent Aussie prospect making his way in the US, and another feather in the cap for the ProKick program. Originally drafted into the AFL at No.63 in 2010 by the Melbourne Demons, Johnston decided to turn his attention to gridiron punting, training with Nathan Chapman and ProKick for the last 18 months. It was Chapman who contacted Ohio State, and provided them with the tape to prove his star's big boot. And make no mistake, Johnston has a big boot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c4dtOnnJQY “I do have in my film him punting the ball 80 yards, and I’ve got him on film with hang times of 5.2 to 5.4 (seconds),” Chapman told Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch. “(It’s) continually 65 yards, ball after ball after ball.” That kind of distance is great, but it's the hang time that's most impressive. Giving your coverage team over five seconds to get down the field ensures a short return, if any. And it's a skill that's in demand, even in the pros. The 21-year-old has been impressive so far during the Buckeyes' preseason. Cornerbacks and special teams coach Kerry Coombs had nothing but praise for the Aussie, saying: “He’s gifted. He can kick the ball a long way. He can kick it high, he can kick it where you want him to kick it. He can do all the kicks right now." Placekicker Drew Basil -- who had previously been punting as well -- also had a glowing appraisal of Johnston. “Oh, my gosh, he’s unbelievable,” Basil said. “Just the way the ball comes off his foot, it’s pretty amazing. He has a different punting form than most people see in America. What they’re taught is to plant their leg really hard into the ground and swing up. They don’t come off the ground. It’s pretty cool.” By all accounts Johnston is fitting in well at his new home, too. He looks to be the team's No.1 punter already. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9h-sxk13nc He's very familiar with some of Australia's most recent college punters, and cites Hawaii's Alex Dunnachie, Memphis' Tom Horsney and LSU's Jamie Keehn as inspiration for the move to American football. If he can have a college career as successful as Dunnachie's, he'll be in good stead. Johnston comes to Ohio State at the perfect time. When their pledged punter, Johnny Townsend, actually signed with Florida in early February (he always wanted to be a Gator), the Buckeyes were in the unenviable position of having their kicker also take punts. Not an ideal situation. Now, thanks to Chapman's lobbying and some terrific tape, the Buckeyes have their punter and Johnston has his college -- a college that just so happens to be one of the best in the country.
