And please don’t forget if you’d like to be in the spotlight to let us know! Details below. Firstly, who are you, what do you do, where do you live and who do you support? My name is Aron Downing, I work for a building company in Perth in the estimating department and have followed the San Francisco 49ers for over 20 years. How did you come to support that team? I started watching the NFL when I was still in high school and the ABC would show one game a week and also had a highlight package hosted by the great Don Lane. I guess I must have seen the highlight of a 49ers game and enjoyed what Montana and Rice had done, the rest is history. My bedroom was soon plastered in 49ers posters and new gear given as presents for every birthday and Christmas. Who is your favourite player currently on the roster? My most recent purchase was a Kaepernick Super Bowl jersey so I’ll have to say him. Who is your all-time favourite player? There are too many options, like most 49er fans I’d have to say Montana, Rice and Young would top the list with the G.O.A.T Jerry Rice getting the top spot since I played a bit of WR back in the day when I still had knees. What was your best moment as a fan? Attending a regular season game in 2011 at The Stick would have to be No. 1. I managed to get seats on the 50-yard line two rows back to see us shut out the Rams and clinch our first playoff spot in years. The atmosphere around the town was amazing, being an NFL fan down under you just don’t get to talk football with many people, so to socialize with other fans simply walking down the street was a real treat. This will soon be replaced in 2014 when I attend the Super Bowl in New Jersey and hopefully see my boys win the big one. (Ha! Bold!) The loss of Michael Crabtree was a major blow to the 49ers receiving group. Who do you think will step up and fill the void? I am so glad we signed Boldin in the offseason. I was getting excited to see him and Crabtree work together and finally give us two quality WR’s. I think Vernon Davis will really step up this season, the change in QB really hurt his stock and he wasn't looked too much once Kaep stepped in. With an offseason for Harbough to tweak the play and the fact he worked out with the WR’s in the recent preseason camp I think he’ll see more thrown his way. The 49ers and the Seahawks have really developed their rivalry of late. How do you rank it in comparison to other modern NFL rivalries? How do you feel about the Seahawks? It's no Cowboys or Packers but it is certainly growing and the offseason smack talk between players, coaches and fans is only helping. These are two young teams both starting to get something going so hopefully this rivalry continues, hopefully we stay one step ahead though. Colin Kaepernick exploded onto the scene late last season, how do you think he'll develop in this upcoming season? To play in a Super Bowl after only 10 games is an amazing start and I think he will continue to improve. He has the perfect coach to get the most of him and has a much greater skill set than Alex Smith and look what Harbough did with him. So long as they can keep him healthy and have a few weapons I can’t see why he won’t improve for years to come. How did you feel as a fan when you saw the news that Kaepernick was rocking a Miami Dolphins hat? As a fan of the 49ers it’s not a good look but I also understand where he is coming from and that he is young man and only wearing it as an accessory. So long as it’s not a Cowboys, Packers or Seahawks cap then it’s all good. I’d rather he didn’t wear other teams gear but I’m not going to hate on him for it. How do you follow the sport as an Aussie? For years I have relied on websites and what ever games Foxtel would show each week. Last year I invested in a League Pass (NFL Game Pass) and watched 49ers game and other games along the way. I have already purchased my 2013 league pass and looking forward to the first preseason game. Is there anything about the NFL you wish was in Australian sport? I am fan of free agency and trades and look forward to seeing the AFL continue to expand this and see where it goes. It is certainly new for a lot of the locals but it makes sense and allows the players to move for better opportunities and also for clubs to try and improve their rosters. Is there anything about Australian sport you wish was in the NFL? I’d love to see them have games over the entire weekend and not just Sundays, purely from a fans point of view for us Down Under folk so we could watch games on a Sunday morning our time. Watching playoff games last season on Sunday morning was a delight. Which of your friends/family members have suffered the most due to your fandom? My wife was dragged (kicking and screaming of course) to the USA for a holiday that started with us going to see a home game. Our next trip in 2014 is organised the same with us getting to San Francisco for the last ever regular season game at The Stick. She recently commented that it looked like “San Francisco threw up on me,” due to the amount of fan gear I was wearing at the time, as I no doubt had a Giants jersey or a Golden State Warriors cap on with some 9ers gear. Do you really blame me though? As they say, “Who’s got it better than us!?” - Big props to Aron for taking the time to answer our questions and profess his fandom to the rest of Australia.
