This week in the NFL saw our first overtime game of the season, a blowout by the Lions (you read right, by the Lions, not of the Lions) and the Buffalo Bills having to wait 10 minutes after everyone had left the building before finally being declared winners. An entertaining week to say the least.
Buffalo Bills 38 defeated Oakland Raiders 35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akadH35UC-I&feature=related Quick Analysis: A high-scoring back-and-forth game saw the Bills record their second win of the season. Buffalo overcame a 3 TD second quarter by the Raiders when QB Ryan Fitzpatrick fired a TD pass with 14 seconds remaining in the final quarter. Player of the Game: Fred Jackson (Bills). 117 yards on 15 carries including 2 TDs sparking his side's second half run.
Green Bay Packers 30 defeated Carolina Panthers 23 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhgexfJDfOA&NR=1 Quick Analysis: Thanks to another big performance from rookie QB Cam Newton, the Panthers gave the defending champions a real run for their money. In the end, his miscues probably cruelled the Panthers' hopes of recording the upset, but it is all a learning curb for the youngster. One man he would do well to learn from was his counterpart in this game, Aaron Rodgers whose steady hand kept the Packers undefeated. Player of the Game: Charles Woodson (Packers). The veteran outsmarted Newton collecting two interceptions keeping the Packers in front.
Detroit Lions 48 defeated Kansas City Chiefs 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOhLEfCABsk&NR=1 Quick Analysis: I thought that Detroit would be fairly good this year. I also thought the Chiefs would struggle. I didn't think these teams would be this far apart in week 2. The Lions were relentless as they recorded the largest regular season win in franchise history. Player of the Game: Matthew Stafford (Lions). Four TDs by the Lions' QB showed the scoring potential the Lions' possess this season.
Cleveland Browns 27 defeated Indianapolis Colts 19 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTMAl9wkcjU&feature=related Quick Analysis: Indianapolis held their first lead in a game without Peyton Manning as their QB for the first time since 1997. Think about that for a second. Now realise that the Colts were comprehensively beaten by the Browns in their own stadium anyway. Is it an understatement to say that Kerry Collins doesn't quite replace what Peyton Manning brought to the team? Player of the Game: Peyton Hillis (Browns). The Browns need constant production from Hillis this season and will be hoping that his 94 yard, 2 TD performance is a sign of things to come.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24 defeated Minnesota Vikings 20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghJzwDjP1tU&feature=related Quick Analysis: The Vikings put together a very good first half, but then watched it all fall apart as they were outscored 24-3 in the second half. RB LeGarrette Blount found the end zone in the final minute to get the Buccaneers their first win of the season. Player of the Game: Josh Freeman (Buccaneers). The stats don't really do Freeman justice, but he was the centre of another Buccaneeers comeback.
New Orleans Saints 30 defeated Chicago Bears 13 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZSlOYu-i-E&NR=1 Quick Analysis: An impressive defensive performance by the Saints quickly saw this one fall apart for the Bears who led after the first quarter. Saints' QB Drew Brees was sublime throwing 3 TDs the first of which came on a 79 yard bomb to Devery Henderson. Player of the Game: Roman Harper (Saints). 2 Sacks (and unlucky not to get 1 more) never allowed Bears' QB Jay Cutler to settle into his offense.
New York Jets 32 defeated Jacksonville Jaguars 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgDnyRyT0Xs&NR=1 Quick Analysis: Dressed like the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jets pummelled the Jaguars through a stifling defensive performance. The Jaguars might have liked to have David Garrard back for this one as his replacement Luke McGown through a miserable 59 yards and 4 interceptions. Player of the Game: Antonio Cromartie (Jets). Had a field day as McGown struggled picking up 2 interceptions.
Pittsburgh Steelers 24 defeated Seattle Seahawks 0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg1aPVRkzS0&NR=1 Quick Analysis: Staying with the Steelers' theme, Pittsburgh quickly showed that rumours of their demise were greatly exaggerated. Led by QB Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers were ruthlessly efficient on offense. After giving up 35 points to the Ravens last week, the Steelers' defense didn't crack once. Player of the Game: Troy Polamalu (Steelers). Led the defense all day as the Steelers shut out the Seahawks.
Tennessee Titans 26 defeated Baltimore Ravens 13 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bso9WOLskXg Quick Analysis: Former Seahawk Matt Hasselbeck had a better day out than his former team did as the Titans pulled away from the Ravens with a 10-0 third quarter. The Ravens came out flat after their emotional victory over divisional rivals, the Steelers, last week. The defense smothered QB Joe Flacco who was sacked 3 times and threw 2 interceptions. Player of the Game: Jason McCourty (Titans). Recorded 4 tackles and an interception to help the Titans pull off the upset.
Washington Redskins 22 defeated Arizona Cardinals 21 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV6xZ_2vYZ4&feature=related Quick Analysis: Mike Shanahan's decision to go with Rex Grossman at QB is 2 from 2 so far. There were some nervous moments in the final quarter with the Redskins down by 8, but a Santana Moss TD and Graham Gano FG gave the Redskins the tight victory. Player of the Game: Tim Hightower (Redskins). Really busy afternoon for Hightower who finished with over 100 yards combined.
Dallas Cowboys 27 defeated San Francisco 49ers 24 (OT) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKhcrv97QAk Quick Analysis: It could have got really interesting in Dallas if not for the final 10 minutes of regulation against the 49ers. Trailing by 10, and with a collapsed lung no less, QB Tony Romo drove for a TD midway through the fourth to bring the Cowboys within 3. The Cowboys scored 3 more on the last play of the fourth quarter, a Dan Bailey FG. Then, the Cowboys won the game after Romo threw a 77 yard pass in OT to set up another Bailey FG (phew! - Editor Dom). Player of the Game: Tony Romo (Cowboys). Copped a lot of criticism for his meltdown in New York last week, but responded with a stellar 345 yard, 2 TD performance to win his team the game.
Denver Broncos 24 defeated Cincinnati Bengals 22 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP2bQUbp3eM&feature=related Quick Analysis: The Broncos have been hit really hard by injuries in the first part of the season, but not even missing 6 starters could prevent the Broncos from defeating the Bengals who haven't won in Denver since 1975. Denver got out in front early and hung on to get in the winner's list for week 2. Player of the Game: Willis McGahee (Broncos). Scored the first TD of the match and added 101 rushing yards over the course of the game.
Houston Texans 23 defeated Miami Dolphins 13 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euKbUg5Rkr8 Quick Analysis: The Dolphins literally can't wait to be able to play somewhere other than Miami. The Dolphins' ineptitude at home was on display once more as Texans' QB Matt Schaub and RB Ben Tate dominated the first half to send the Dolphins to 0-2--not a good position to be in, especially in the highly competitive AFC East. Player of the Game: Ben Tate (Texans). Rookie RB continues to impress as Arian Foster struggles with injury, adding another 100 yards to really put the Texans on the front foot all game.
New England Patriots 35 defeated San Diego Chargers 21 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voWZHO39yec Quick Analysis: A potential AFC Championship game was a demonstration of the difference between the Patriots and the Chargers: situational football. New England's defense was by no means great as Phillip Rivers racked up the yards, but they came up with two interceptions, two fumbles and a goal line stand to hold the Chargers at bay. The Patriots offense sizzled for the first half, sputtered in the third quarter, but was able to get back on top of things in the final quarter. Player of the Game: Tom Brady (Patriots). Sets another record with the most yards ever for the first two games of an NFL season, 3 TDs, this guy just keeps getting better.
Atlanta Falcons 35 defeated Philadelphia Eagles 31 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tHLqKd7KT0&feature=related Quick Analysis: This dream matchup didn't fail to live up to expectations with both high-powered offenses scoring plenty of points in the second half before the Falcons escaped with the win. The Falcons may have been fortunate to see Eagles' QB Michael Vick leave in the third quarter, but 'Matty Ice' still had to do plenty of work in the fourth to get the Falcons over the line. Player of the Game: Tony Gonzalez (Falcons). Provided a consistent target for Matt Ryan to hit, especially in the end zone where he scored twice.
New York Giants 28 defeated St Louis Rams 16 http://youtu.be/ZO_1ESROQJY Quick Analysis: It has been a while since we have had to wait this long into the season for a Manning to pick up a win, but Eli got the Manning family on the board in 2011 with a 2 TD performance as the Giants overcame the Rams. Sam Bradford was good at QB for the Rams, but couldn't get the TDs necessary to pick up the victory. Player of the Game: Justin Tuck (Giants). Picked up 1.5 sacks and played good defense when on the field to really rattle the Rams' offense.
