Mark argues that the Los Angeles Dodgers could go far into the MLB postseason, but might fall short. In the middle of June, the Dodgers lost to the Padres 5-2 and their record for 2013 was 30-42 (.417). Things were looking pretty bleak for their expensive roster and their big guns were either not firing or were getting injured. An amazing run that coincided with the emergence of rookie, Yasiel Puig, sparked them into a record run where they went 62-28 (.689) since the loss to the Padres. Their roster, whilst very expensive, looks like it could be a big threat in the postseason so we ask -- Can the Dodgers go all the way in 2013? Offence Their batting line-up looks solid all the way through to the No. 8 spot (and even No. 9 when Kershaw is connecting) with a good mix of sluggers and base hitters. While Don Mattingly has experimented quite a bit trying to come up with the right line-up, he has plenty of tools to work with in Puig, Ethier, Gonzalez, Kemp, Ramirez, Ellis (both Mark & AJ) and Crawford. If he chooses Puig as the leadoff man in the postseason then pitchers can expect to worry about their ERA from pitch one, especially if he gets on base early. His improvement at extending the pitch count as the season progressed was noticeable and this helped him increase his walk count. Big hitters backing him up like Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp and Juan Uribe will only add to the nightmare facing opposition pitchers. Pitching The Dodgers have three top line pitchers at their disposal including two of the top five for regular season ERA (No. 1 Kershaw 1.83, Greinke No. 5 2.63). Their third option pitcher, Hyun-Jin Ryu, finished the season with a 14-8 record and 3.00 ERA. Respectable numbers for a third option and the Dodgers will be hoping he can continue that success into the postseason. The worry for this Dodgers outfit comes when the starters come off and the relief pitchers come out from the bullpen. Kenley Jansen has pitched well as the closer with 28 saves and 16 holds but it is Ronald Belisario that will be the key for the Dodgers. You can hear the collective sighs of the Dodgers fans in Hawaii when he comes out to pitch with a 2-0 lead knowing that it is in big trouble. If the starters can see out 100-120 pitches and make it to the 8th or 9th inning then the need for Belisario will decrease and the chances of a win increase. Schedule The Dodgers face a dangerous Atlanta side in the Division Series but they would have to feel confident about their chances given some of the struggles the Atlanta offence has been through this season. If they make it through to the NL Championship Series then I would expect them to face the St Louis Cardinals. A tough ask given their potent offence, this should be an evenly matched series. Conclusion With one of the league’s top payrolls you would expect the Dodgers to be in the hunt for the World Series. Can they do it? I am confident that if they play well and their pitchers can make it to at least the 8th inning then they have an excellent chance this October. There is a certain charm about this team that developed during the regular season so if you get a chance to see one of their games, enjoy it. Prediction - Dodgers make the World Series but fall to either Boston or Detroit.
