Channel Ten Network Holdings head Lachlan Murdoch has recently announced that Australia's premier 24/7 all sports channel OneHD will be relaunched as a general entertainment channel designed to appeal to males aged between 25 and 54. The relaunch was announced after Murdoch revealed the channel was at a ‘‘dead end’’ with ratings of below one share point. As of May the 8th, One will feature a Monday to Friday line-up of male based shows such as Ice Road Truckers, Terriers, COPS, Lights Out, Breakout Kings and Sons of Anarchy. [caption id="attachment_385" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Really? Ice Road Truckers over the NBA?"][/caption] Although the channel is set to have an entertainment focus, premium sport offerings such as AFL, Formula One and MotoGP will still be shown on the weekend, and no information was revealed about the future of popular International sports such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, etc. This really is a blow for the growth of NBA in Australia as we were seeing quite a large number of NBA games during the 2011 season and One even had a special 'Andrew Bogut Presents NBA Prime Time' weekly program that featured the Milwaukee Bucks best game every Tuesday night in Prime Time programming. It has been rumored that One will keep showing international sports such as the NBA until their current contract ends (which to this day are a mystery as far as I know) and after that all international sporting programs will be exclusively shown on Pay TV formats such as Foxtel. Interestingly Mr Murdoch is a director of the global media giant News Corp, who owns 25 per cent of Foxtel. It will also be interesting to see what happens to One's current all sports website http://onehd.com.au and I hope for our sake that One will at least show a majority of the upcoming NBA playoffs series as its off peak programming (most NBA games are shown in the morning or early afternoon) shouldn't interfere to much with other programming and surely would rate a lot better at that time any B-Grade American comedy or drama program.
