Hey there football fans, and welcome to the second NFL Down Under ‘Team of the Week’. As our loyal readers we figured we should hear who you think played best each week, instead of having us rant on about how good our own teams are. Each week we will send out a Facebook post and tweet, and based on your responses the team with the most mentions will be crowned weekly champion.
THE NFL DOWN UNDER WEEK 3 WINNER IS-
The Buffalo Bills (yes, again!)
Record- 3-0Week 3 Result- Buffalo Bills 34 – New England Patriots 31. Yep, the unthinkable happened. Brady & Co. strolled into town and got pipped by the Bills, who snapped their fifteen-game losing streak to the Patriots. Yet again Buffalo came surging home in the second half, putting up 17 points in the final quarter including a game-winning field goal as time expired. Tom Brady was picked off four times by four different defensive players – which equaled his total INT count for the whole of last season. It was, well and truly, a game for the ages. Divisonal Standings- First in the AFC East, +40 point differential.
Standout Players- There are really too many standout players to count. Ryan Fitzpatrick (27/40, 369 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) and was solid as per usual, but it was a game where the Buffalo receivers came out to play. The stats below speak for themselves:
- Donald Jones- 5 receptions, 101 yards with a 48-yard long reception.
- Steve Johnson- 8 receptions, 94 yards, 1 TD and a 33-yard long reception.
- David Nelson- 6 receptions, 84 yards and a 26-yard long reception.
- Rushing: 12 carries for 74 yards and a TD, averaging 6.2 YPC.
- Receiving: 5 receptions for 87 yards including a 38-yard long catch that set up the winning field goal.
What It Means- The Bills and the Lions are continuing to shock us all. Who really thought they were going to beat the Patriots? Frankly, I don’t know what this means. While on paper Buffalo looks like one of the strongest teams in the NFL, its past decade of rabble is holding me back from believing they're for real (who could forget these days?). Beating the Patriots will instill them with a ton of confidence, though and they should now go into each week truly believing they can win.
Fun Fact- In the past two weeks Buffalo has been outscored 42-13 in the first half, yet outscored its opponents 59-24 in the second half. Absurd would be an understatement. Also, the Bills became the first team ever to come back and win after being at least 18 points down in consecutive weeks.
Next Week- The Bills can - and should - advance to 4-0 when they take on a vulnerable Bengals outfit. Sure, it’s a road game, but that didn’t stop them from destroying the Chiefs 41-7 back in week 1 at Arrowhead Stadium.
Final Thought- Ryan Fitzpatrick has thrown for nine TDs so far this season. The only QBs in the NFL to match or beat that so far are Matt Stafford (9), Drew Brees (9) and Tom Brady (11). How good can this guy become with such a strong WR core?
Matthew Caelli- "It has to be the Bills... that was not only one heck of a game, but one heck of a turnaround from last year!" Luke Flood- "No question. The AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills."
Do you agree with the Bills? How far can they take it this season? Let us know.
