Thanks to 2K Sports, USSDU was lucky enough to get invited to the media event held for the next-generation of NBA 2K14 on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.Going into this event like many of the assorted crowd, we were full with excitement and had a certain level of expectation. I can say by the end of the event we were all blown away with the leap in progression, specifically with the graphics and attention to detail. The excitement beyond the first few stunning replay screens & flashy highlights didn’t diminish either. There was so much hype regarding the visuals and my experience exceeded all expectations. Once everyone got a taste of the on court action it was time to settle down and really get into the detail on the court.
Graphics and PresentationThe player models, attention to detail and lighting will be the most advanced you've ever seen in a sports game. Every player in the NBA has had a 3D facial scan, this has brought the game experience and player likeness to life. Even on the broadcast camera,as an avid NBA fan, I could tell who everyone was on the court without reading names being shown or looking at jersey numbers. I can safely say that’s the first time in a sports game I've ever been able to do that simply because the models are just that authentic. Everything from the sweat, jerseys, beards, fingernails, shoes, and accessories are spot on. The amount of time and effort put into the little things you might never see during a game is outstanding.
GameplayPowered by the new game engine called Eco-Motion, the biggest difference to current generation gameplay is player positioning and foot planting. There is no more sliding in the game which generates a great smoothness to the gameplay and looks great when running plays. It really brings out the most in player movement and footwork. Defence is a great example. Gone are the days when your player magically slides in-front of the ball carrier, or to only get in the way of a drive animation and be called for a foul. Finally with the new feature named point of emphasis, the plays you make on the fly actually work straight away and you can see it play out on the court in front of you. When choosing to ‘shut down perimeter’, my perimeter players actually closed in tightly on the Miami Heat players. Next time down the floor I chose for them to get back, where my three guards ran back down the floor as soon as the Heat rebounded the ball to close down any fast breaks opportunities.
ImpressionEveryone in the room including myself walked away amazed and agreed it’s the best looking video game we have ever seen to date. The gameplay at times can feel like current-gen but that's certainly not a bad thing. Better yet if you already have NBA 2K14 on PS3 or Xbox for an extra $21 (AUD) you can get the digital copy on your new console without having to buy a new copy. Unfortunately Australia don’t get the next-generation of consoles or games until 2 weeks after the Unites States but despite that everyone in the room even non sport gamers, are picking up this game on day one.
