Over the past week i have been overloaded with information and announcements on 2k13, from developer insights, interviews and the 2012 Gamescon conference.
Luckily enough i was sent all the footage from the presentations to develop my first impressions and insight of this years upcoming NBA game from 2K sports.
The main new feature this year is the 'Control Stick', the right analog stick now works for dribbling, shooting, post play, and passing.
This new control enables a huge amount of new moves on offensive and defence.
Last year's Isomotion control didn't allow players to do anything standing because it was tied to your movement stick. Now you can easily cross over, go behind the back, or between the legs & holding down the left trigger turns the Control Stick back into the Shot Stick from last year.
The new controls for a dribbler and a player in the post mimic one another. Twirling the right analog stick to spin works in both states. Since players no longer need to master a different minigame when posting up, it should be much easier for players to transition between attacking the basket and playing with your back to the basket.
Pre-Order your game this year to recieve the All-Star weekend content that gives you the opportunity to play four additional game modes.
Players can participate in an all-new Sprite Slam Dunk Contest, Three-Point Contest, the Rising Stars Challenge and of course the NBA All-Star Game.
There is rumour that these modes can include playable legends, so you can have Michael Jordan vs Blake Griffin in a dunk comp for example.
This year each player can have up to five signature skills, which cover everything from being a spot up shooter on offense to being a chasedown artist like Lebron James or pick-pocketer on defence.
Most of the signature skills are individual traits, but some players also have skills that extend to their teammates, floor generals like Steve Nash will improve the play of everyone else on the court, as will a high-energy defensive specialist.
Xbox 360 users have the ability this year of using their kinect motion peripherals to change plays, call timeouts, set screens, substitutions and swear at the referee causing a technical foul for verbal abuse.
The game opens up with an amazing real life arial view of the stadium , similar to the one's seem in 2k12 , then cuts to inside the stadium to show the warmups and starting line-ups.
There has been some presentation upgrades to the scoreboards and menu's with what seems to be a gold shiny boarders, it looks like Jay-Z did have an influence in this area, in my opinion it just doesn't look right.
The crowd and the announcers dont seem to have changed much from last year but i could see a few more dead ball animations and trash talking from the players. I expect to see a few more additions when the full game is released.
The players look better this year, and so does the lighting. The overall look of the gameplay is much smoother, especially in rebounding animations and contact plays.
I noticed the on-ball defence has been varsley improved, and that's a welcome addition.
Players have more smooth movements on defense and appear to be much more reactive.
Physical defenders guarding against drives to the baskets are noticeable as well. If you step into the dribbler’s lane, the collision deflects guys the way it would in real life so the attacker won’t just slide off the defender.
If you're beaten by a player you have no chance to recover. That also means that you can’t recover from an opponent’s fast break.
Something i was really hoping for was solid rebounding and blocks, rebounding looked the same and the blocks didn't look amazing but at least there were no more awkward blocks via elbows and forearms as seen far to often in NBA 2K12.
The biggest addition to 2k13 is the control stick - it's what NBA Live's big weapon was before the game crashed.
Well NBA2k has decided to bring this on board and despite the criticism i think it's a great addition, it just opens up the game and gives you so much more opportunity.
Even if you decide the 'control stick' is not for you, then you can simply toggle back the controls to the default from last year.
In my opinion the best addition to the new gameplay is the bounce pass along with some of the jump shots from Harden and Durant they looked spot on.
You can also protect the ball in and away from the defender as well as improved contact animations on pump fake's and drives to the basket.
Shout out to DaWolf & JerzeyReign for sending me some live footage!
So far from what I've seen it's looking good.
The demo should be out for Playstation 3 & Xbox 360 late September .
Stay tuned for more 2k13 Info!
If You could put any player against each other in a dunk competition , who would it be?
