While they Hornets management are staying silent on who they will select with their number one pick in the upcoming draft, they may have just showed their cards. The Hornets have traded former number 2 pick (Charlotte) Center Emeka Okafor and guard Trevor Ariza to the Washington Wizards for Rashard Lewis and the 46th pick. In making this trade, the Hornets free up some playing time for the expected first pick selection in Anthony Davis, forming a formidable front line with potential free agent Chris Kaman. The Hornets free up two long term deals and in return will likely waive Lewis, cutting over $10million of their payroll.
"We are rebuilding our team and this is one step in our new direction," Hornets general manager Dell Demps said. "This trade will provide an opportunity for our young players to develop and create flexibility to add to our core group moving forward."For Washington this was a great move, widely criticized for trading for Rashard Lewis and his horrendous contract, they Wizards get a fantastic backup for the often injured Nene as well as a competent wing player to run alongside John Wall.
"We felt like we needed to add some veterans to the roster, and we were able to do that with this move. ... We get players that are good solid players and fill two needs for us," he said. "Instead of going into free agency to try to fill our needs, we did it through a trade."A great trade for both teams when considering that Eric Gordon is a free agent and while he is tipped to leave, the Hornets offer suddenly got a lot more palatable. All of a sudden this team is starting to remind me of the hornets of old. What do you think of the trade? let us know by commenting in the field below. Photo Credit: www.blogs.bettor.com
