The consistent performers that led you out of the doldrums, when all seemed lost. The players that never failed you. The superstars that each week gained 15-20 fantasy points each week. We will look at the best player in each position. The player that gained the most fantasy points for the 2012 season.
QUARTERBACK:Drew Brees: 337 Fantasy Points Drew Brees continued to be a fantasy star this season, despite New Orleans 7-9 record and the bounty-gate scandal affecting their early season form. He carried the team on his shoulders and registered amazing numbers. The only QB to throw for over 5,000 yards with 5,177, the only QB to throw over 40 touchdown passes with 43 and completed 422 of his 670 attempts. Honourable Mention: Tom Brady & Aaron Rodgers.
RUNNING BACK:Adrian Peterson: 297 Fantasy Points Back in pre-season, many doubted Peterson would be ready for Week 1, which saw his value plummet. Peterson was seen as a risk with ACL surgery 9 months prior to the beginning of the season. He was taken in the 3rd and 4th rounds of some fantasy drafts. He repaid those that took the risk, with probably the best season any running back has ever had. He ran for 2097 yards, just nine yards shy of the all time record, including 12 TDs. He also had 217 receiving yards and one TD. His season is even more impressive, as Minnesota have an average quarterback and passing game and opposing defences would stack the box with 8 or 9 defensive players, expecting a Peterson carry. Honourable Mention: Arian Foster & Alfred Morris.
WIDE RECEIVER:Calvin Johnson: 214 Fantasy Points Megatron not only defeated the "Madden curse", he annihilated it. Even though he didn't match his touchdown tally from 2011, he was able to break Jerry Rice's receiving yards record for the season. Finishing with 1964 yards receiving in 2012 and five touchdowns. He collected 122 receptions, four more than his closest rival and all this coming with a team that finished the season 4-12. Honourable Mention: Brandon Marshall & Dez Bryant.
TIGHT END:Jimmy Graham: 144 Fantasy Points A title that surely would have went to Rob Gronkowski, had the Gronk not missed five games with a broken forearm. However, Jimmy Graham still collected the 3rd most receptions with 85, behind Jason Witten and Tony Gonzalez. He had 9 touchdowns and 982 receiving yards. His production was hampered by an ankle sprain that affected him for a couple weeks, but it was still a successful season for 6'6 former basketball player. Honourable Mention: Rob Gronkowski & Tony Gonzalez.
KICKER:Blair Walsh: 165 Fantasy Points This rookie kicker, also known as the "Blair Walsh Project", set all kinds of records in his first season and he has been vital to Minnesota's play-off push. He averaged 10.3 points per game and scored 54 in the last three weeks alone. The 56-yard field goal in Week 17 vs Green Bay was his career long, as he made all nine field goal attempts of 50 yards or more in 2012. Honourable Mention: Stephen Gostkowski.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:Chicago Bears: 212 Fantasy Points Finished 26 points ahead of the next D/ST in season 2012. Chicago's D/ST were simply awesome in 2012 and had 10 total return TDs from either interceptions or fumble recoveries. Led by Charles "Peanut" Tillman, Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and co., Chicago had a total of 44 takeaways this season and scored 20 or more points on five occasions this season. Honourable Mention: Denver Broncos.
So there you have it, the best of the best in season 2012. The top performers in each position. Did any of these 6 lead you to glory in 2012? Let us know!
