WHY HE WON OUR PLAYER OF THE WEEKThese are career numbers Rajon Rondo is putting up against the Miami Heat. Can you believe that Rondo's career average is about 10 points a game and in this series he is scoring almost 3 times that amount? He is highlighting the fact that Miami are without a quality starting point guard or front court. Mario Chalmers simply doesn't cut it as a starting guard, he would make an excellent back up behind say Steve Nash but that is not a luxury they have right now. Rondo is getting the step on Chalmers every time down the court and is able to finish with ease at the rim or on an open jump shot which he is knocking down at an unbelievable rate at the moment. Rajon's slick, career playoff performances are coming at a time of extreme pressure and high stakes. This is something that more than a fair share of superstars in this league struggle with on a night to night basis... This is Rondo answering questions about his outstanding basketball against the Heat after game 3.
"My goal was to win, I just wanted to sacrifice and do everything for my teammates to get the lead, keep the lead and just run the show."Put into perspective, this weeks play from Rondo has produced 1 win for the Celtics, they need 7 more to win the NBA Title.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSESStrengths: Rajon doesn't boast flashy scoring or rebounding numbers all that often but the stability, dribble penetration and ball movement he gives the Celtics is all the more important. Rondo runs a one man fast break for the Celtics, he is the only one on that team that is suited to a run and gun style of play. It keeps the team moving and the tempo up. Weaknesses: These days in the NBA there are more point guards than not that have a reliable 15-20 foot jump shot. Rondo has got away with it in this series as even the 3 (40% in 3 games vs Miami) is serving him well. For Rajon to become a more complete offensive player he and the Celtics will need that jump shot reliable as they move into the future as a team.
