Welcome to our newest feature: The Aussie NBA Fan Spotlight. Our first Aussie is Sydney based Laker fan StathWelcome to our Aussie NBA Fan Spotlight where we focus on you the fan and your love of the game. This week we talk to a longtime Laker fan Strath from Sydney.
Firstly, who are you, what do you do, where do you live and who do you support? Strath Meurer, 6ft 2 inches, 37 yrs old, father of 2. I'm a Business Analyst and keen cyclist. I live in Sydney, Australia and am a Lakers fan
How did you come to support that team? In the late 80's, basketball really took off in Australia which mirrored the meteoric rise of Michael Jordan. The ABC would show 1 game a week very late at night on a Friday, everyone at school use to stay up and watch it. I remember they would show lots of Bulls games or Lakers games in which the Lakers would lose? So I went for the Lakers as I though they where the underdog, that and Magic and James Worthy where always fun to watch
Who is your favourite player currently on the roster? I'm a big Pau Gasol fan, he played really well against Team USA in the Olympics. I love his array of low post moves, ability to go left of right, hit the outside J, pass the ball, I could go on.
Who is your all-time favourite player? Magic, even today I am blown away about a guy whose 6 ft 9 and is playing point guard. Not only is he playing point gaurd 'out of position', but he is one of the best at it. The passing, the basketball IQ, again, I could go on.
What was your best moment as a fan? They happen all the time, seeing a perfectly executed pick and roll, that makes me rewind it, or perfect backdoor cut or bounce pass. Basketball is a cool game.
What are your predictions for your team this year? Well the Lakers should do better than last year, hopefully make it deep into the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how Steve Nash does and the other new players.
How do you follow the sport living in Australia? The internet allows me to keep up on the scores, highlights and stories whist I'm at work and we have ESPN at home, so I can catch a couple of games a week, not like the good ol days of box scores in the news paper
Who do you predict will win it all this coming season? Ooooh, always a tough question. If Oklahoma don't make any trades, I'd like to see them win it, they have worked hard the last few years.
Which of your friends/family members have suffered the most due to your fandom? I only watch Basketball when my wife and the kids are asleep, thus no interruptions and everyone is happy. I'm a smart guy right?
Any final words of wisdom? So many good teams and good players in the NBA, it's fantastic and Go Lakers!
