A Look At The Top Five Point Guards On Offer at the 2013 NBA Draft.[caption id="attachment_16636" align="aligncenter" width="480"] Associated Press[/caption] With the 2013 NBA Draft just two weeks away, there's no better time than now to take a look at some of the top players on offer. Over the next two weeks we will take a look at the top prospects at each position. Let's begin with a look at the top five point guards that have nominated for this years draft.
TREY BURKE - MichiganAge: 20 Height: 6'1" Weight: 190 lbs. Trey Burke is the highest profile point guard on offer in this draft. He was the leader of the Michigan Wolverines and took them to the 2013 NCAA National Championship Game, eventually losing to the Louisville Cardinals. Burke is quick, but but doesn't have the explosive quickness around the rim. He may only be 6' 1", but he has a much larger wingspan of 6' 5". This helps him strip opponents of the ball when they least expect it. I can see Burke being drafted by the Sacramento Kings with pick 7. They do have Isaiah Thomas that has run the point well for a couple of seasons, but it would be hard for them to pass on Burke if he still on the board when its their time to pick.
C.J McCOLLUM - Lehigh UniversityAge: 21 Height: 6'3" Weight: 200 lbs. C.J McCollum is a scoring point guard, who can also play the shooting guard position if need be. McCollum made a name for himself in last year's NCAA tournament against Duke. He lead his Lehigh Mountain Hawks to a huge upset posting 30 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Since then he has gone from strength to strength. McCollum is capable of scoring at will, but don't underestimate his passing abilities either. He lacks explosive quickness, but makes up for that with his innate ability to create his own shot. I'm expecting the Minnesota Timberwolves to select McCollum with the 9th pick. He could prove to be a great backup for Ricky Rubio, or they could choose to play him at the shooting guard position.
MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS - SyracuseAge: 21 Height: 6'6" Weight: 185 lbs. Michael Carter-Williams was the top dog in Syracuse this past season, after being behind Dion Waiters previously. He took his game to a new level and in the process began to get a lot of interest from NBA teams. He's a great ball handler, one of the best in this draft class and a selfless player who loves to bring his teammates into the game. He still needs to work on his shooting game, but with his work ethic, it should improve. Carter-Williams looks like the perfect fit for the Dallas Mavericks. I expect the Mavericks to snap him with the 13th pick. Dallas are reportedly going after free-agent Chris Paul, if they do get him, I think he would slot in nicely behind Paul at the point guard position.
DENNIS SCHROEDER - Braunschweig (Germany)Age: 19 Height: 6'2" Weight: 165 lbs. Dennis Schroeder is one of the top prospects from outside of the U.S.A. This kid can play, and he caught the eye of scouts whilst playing for Braunschweig in his home country of Germany. Schroeder is a terrific ball handler and has very quick first step. He loves to lead from the front, getting his team mates involved when possible. Some negative reports have come out of team workouts, with whispers he struggled against tough defence. This is a minor bump in the road, but shouldn't hurt is stock watch too much. There has been many rumors that the Boston Celtics have promised to draft Schroeder if he is still available when its their time to pick, with selection 16. I doubt he will still be available at that time. I'm predicting the Milwaukee Bucks to pick him with selection 15.
SHANE LARKIN - MiamiAge: 20 Height: 5'11" Weight: 176 lbs. Shane Larkin led Miami to their best season in school history in 2012-13. He showed huge improvement from the previous season and proved he can distinguish between when it is time to shoot and time to pass. Larkin grabbed the attention of the public at the draft combine in May; he recorded the second-highest maximum vertical leap in combine history. His jump was recorded at almost 112cm! That, along with his impressive college numbers were enough for most teams to offer him a workout. I could see the Celtics selecting Larkin with pick 16, if they decide to go for a guard, instead of a big. If Boston passes on him, he could fall into the hands Atlanta or Chicago.
