Last week, all three of our tips got up – did you get on? This week, we see some massive games again in the NFL. There are teams desperate to avoid the dreaded 0-3, while others are looking to keep their perfect records in tact.
Saints v Chiefs: CELLAR DWELLER SHOWDOWNThe Mercedes Benz Superdome plays host to a match between two sides desperate to get off the mark after a winless start to the season. Without Sean Payton, the Saints have looked very poor in losing to Carolina and Washington, and they need to get their season back on track with a win here. Their defense has been absolutely deplorable, conceding nearly 1000 yards already against sides who are hardly offensive heavyweights. Their pressure on opposing Quarterbacks Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III was non-existent, so they will be looking to turn it around and pile the pressure on Matt Cassel. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are moving the ball well on offense but failing to convert that spread into points. They have accumulated 393 and 422 yards in their first two games, but have also had six giveaways so far. We see this being a shootout, with the Saints ($1.24) being far too strong for the Chiefs ($4.20). With both sides struggling defensively, we like the Over 53.0 points at $1.93. Cards v Eagles: ARGUABLY THE FORM SIDE IN THE COMPETITIONIf you extend last season’s results into the mix, it would surprise many to know that the Cardinals ($1.57) are actually the form side, with 9 wins in their last 11 games. They are proof of the old adage that the secret to a great offense is a great defense. Their defense is one of the toughest in the league and by minimizing offensive errors, they have formulated a very successful game plan. Their defeat of the Patriots was their best victory in a number of years, and they have only conceded two touchdowns and 3.4 yards per carry so far this year. Linebacker Daryl Washington tops the NFL with 21 solo tackles. Calais Campbell had two sacks against Tom Brady, and he will be relishing the opportunity to have a crack at Michael Vick and put him under the pump. The Eagles ($2.46) on the other hand have been less convincing in victory, stuttering a little offensively but getting the choccies based on a strong defensive setup. They have given up nine turnovers on offense, but have ground out two one-point wins over the Browns and the Ravens respectively. Good sides can play badly and win, like they did against Cleveland, but their defeat of the Ravens has been overshadowed amidst the concerns regarding their offense. The Cardinals are a quality side and will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season, and the Eagles are primed to put it all together offensively this week. We like them at the line (-3.0) at $1.85 this week. Click here to check out our Cardinals v Eagles market.
Ravens V Pats: THE VANQUISHED SIDES MEETThe Ravens and the Patriots were on the losing end to the Eagles and Arizona last week, but are two strong sides with great ambition who would be very keen to ensure that they bounce back this week. We know how good the Ravens are at home, so it is not often that you see them as big as $1.72 when playing in Baltimore; it is a real credit to the quality of the Patriots ($2.16) that the market has been priced up and backed in this fashion. While the Patriots are an excellent team, they are beatable. The Ravens need to focus on playing their own game rather than trying to be too perfect and focus too much on stopping the Patriots numerous offensive threats. Expect Baltimore to be highly physical and look to get in front of the Pats as early as possible and then use their home crowd advantage to turn the arena into ma fortress, therefore making it oh so hard for New England to respond. The Ravens have never defeated the Patriots in the regular season, the only team that they haven’t in the whole NFL. But they are 12-0 in Baltimore, and have lost only once in 21 games here, so we think that they will break their duck here. We like them just outright at $1.72 to take home the spoils here.
