The Boston Celtics moved to within one game of booking themselves a spot in the NBA finals Wednesday, with a 94-90 victory against the Miami Heat in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference finals. Boston’s fearless leader Kevin Garnett was in fine form, putting up 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Paul Pierce added 19 points and Rajon Rondo dishing out 13 assists. LeBron James put up his usual 30 point, 13 rebound night, but only managed 2 assists, while Dwyane Wade helped the cause with his 27 points and 6 rebounds, but it just wasn’t enough to see the Heat home. In a game Miami were expected to win on their home court, LeBron and Co failed to step up in the final stages, adding fuel to the fire that James struggles to perform under late game pressure. Heat fans had hoped that the return of Chris Bosh from an abdominal injury would spark Miami, but he was only able to muster 14 minutes off the bench, putting up 9 points and 7 rebounds. Being up 78-72 with just under 6:00 to go, you would think Miami should be able to hold out an aging Boston team and come away with the goods. Boston however rallied late, and off the back of a Paul Pierce 3 pointer over James with 52.9 seconds left in the fourth, the Celtics extended their lead out to 2 possessions.
Game 5 MVP: Paul PierceThis was a toss up between Pierce and Garnett but I had to give it to Paul for his clutch late 3 which all put gave Boston the win. Pierce’s 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists helped the Celtics get a massive Game 5 win, but his 3 pointer over LeBron James with under a minute to go helped secure the victory. For a team that was given very little hope against Miami after being pushed to 7 games against Philadelphia, the likes of Pierce, Garnett and Rondo have really picked up their game of late after being down 2-0.
